Modeling of a Dam Under Seismic Excitation with a Staggered Solution Method for the Fluid-Structure Interaction
نویسنده
چکیده
A dam under seismic excitation contains several multi-physics coupled systems that are of interest in computational modeling. The greatest heterogenous coupled systems are the fluid-structure interaction between the fluid and the dam as well as the fluid and the soil. In addition, there is a region near the dam that is subject to bulk cavitation, where the fluid pressure drops below the vaporization pressure of the fluid and consequently the water’s elastic modulus drops to near zero. During this report we investigate the structure equations, the fluid equations, the coupling of the two systems, and the staggered solution procedure for the time stepping of the systems. Silent boundaries for the finite modeling domains are briefly discussed. Existing models and methods are used for the analysis of the systems and the coupling; thus, providing a benchmark model for future research for this heterogeneous coupled system.

To do this, two and three dimensional fluid field models are developed. In three dimension...
متن کاملNumerical Solution for Gate Induced Vibration Due to Under Flow Cavitation
Among the many force s to which hydraulic structures are exposed to, the forces induced by cavitation incident are of typical hydrodynamic unknown forces. The aim of this study is to define these forces as coupled fluid-structure interaction under two dynamic effects. The first dynamic effect which incorporates facilities for dealing with cavitation fluid is based on the appearance and bursting...

Dam behavior investigation has been considered for a long time, with many studies conducted to identify and predict factors influencing such structures. In common dynamic analyses of dams, an input acceleration is typically used. At the same time, it was proved that such structures with a large contact with the ground usually experience different accelerations in their various supporting points...

Silos are structures that are used for storing different types of granular material. Dynamic behavior of silos under seismic loads is very complex. In this paper seismic behavior of steel silos with different height to diameter ratios is investigated by considering granular material-structure interaction using ABAQUS finite element package. Silo wall is modeled by shell elements and its behavio...
متن کاملSeismic Response of Building Structures with Sliding Non-structural Elements
Interaction between a structure under base excitation and heavy non-structural elements that it supports is significant in the seismic analysis and design of the structure. Heavy non-structural elements may slide/rock under base excitation, and this dynamic action affects the seismic behavior of the supporting structure. Hence, in this study, a numerical model was presented to describe the seis...
